Summary: retired aircraft engineer who was the lone survivor of the four occupants on the flight deck of the December 1972 plane crash of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 in the Florida Everglades, killing 101 of the 176 persons aboard after the entire flight crew became distracted by an apparent problem with the landing gear prior to it's final approach when he was riding in the cockpit jump seat as an off-duty flight officer while he was returning to Miami from an assignment in New York at the time of the crash, who had suffered from multiple fractures to his vertebrae causing some paralysis and later recovered from his injuries.
